Pitfalls.

I wish I was writing about the old Atari 2600 game. (that one was one of my favorites…that pixelated vine over pixelated gators triggers instant nostalgia)

Instead, I’m writing about the pitfalls of VO work. I fell into one this week, namely, a sore throat. your choices are: just read your transcript over and over until you know it inside and out, or, if you have editing skills in your wheelhouse, you could do that, or you can write a blog. Obviously, you can see my choice.

The other thing, it’s completely out of your control. If it lasts a week, then you’re out for a week. Does your voice match the rest of what you already recorded? No? Gotta wait. Then the deadline creeps ever so closer.

In other news, the Premier League starts this weekend. So does the NFL. Predicting another Liverpool title and KC in the NFL wins the Super Bowl.

Just a lil’ blog today.

Summer’s End

Hi all, catching the last warm days of the summer here (possibly?), getting prepped for all things fall, and looking forward to it.

I used to love the summer, but man, oh man, living in AZ pretty much killed that for me. After dealing with triple digit heat more than should be humanly allowed, I had enough. I will take a Wisconsin winter over a Phoenix summer any day. You can always pile more clothes on, whereas, there’s a limit to what you can take off.

Had a little bit of downtime, due more to my voice needing the rest vs. lack of work. Been able to have some interesting things happen, though. Won a half hour meeting with Johnny Heller, that paid off dividends. The man is a top narrator for a good reason. More than one, actually.

Watching the Ken Burns National Parks doc. I could watch that endlessly. Visually incredible and impeccably narrated by Peter Coyote (primarily).

A quick note on a piece of software that I used. I started using Pozotron on one of my projects, and holy cow, it’s a game changer. You upload the script you’re working on, then the audio you recorded, then it find the possible errors you made while narrating. Major time saver. (had a free 7hr trial thru the One Voice Conference) I’ll definitely be using it for future projects.

Ok, time to get some work done.

The VO Connection

Hi everyone, hope the end of the summer months are treating you well.

Had a great time while attending the MAVO Happy Hour yesterday, managed to luck out and win a half hour session with the truly great Johnny Heller, audiobook narrator Supreme Being. The man is a great listen, and has an incredible amount audiobooks under his belt. So, looking forward to that.

The other neat thing I’ve been enjoying about these sessions, both at MAVO and at OneVoiceConference is the breakout sessions. I’ve learned so much from others during these sessions, and have been able to teach others during them as well. There has to be some silver linings during the COVID era, right?

Having some deja vu as of late, recording a sequel for a book I had previously narrated. It’s fun revisiting the characters, and it’s interesting to hear how much things have improved, audio-wise, with what I’ve recorded so far. I believe I recorded the initial book with the AT4047, but am using the Sennheiser 416 on this one. Using some newer tech, as well; the SSL2 audio interface as opposed to the Focusrite I was using is a nice upgrade. And that’s the gameplan, upgrading the equipment as the jobs get bigger and better. I’d say I’m pretty well set for now.

Been looking to get that YouTube channel started, should have that at least have ONE piece of content before the end of next week. No promises, though. And I’ll post once I do.

Okey doke. Waiting out the weather delay in the middle of the MN United game.

Lovely Pandemonium

Hi everyone,

Just had a great weekend watching videos, gaining inspiration, and getting to know a lot of great people during the One Voice Conference. It was a blast. There was so much to learn (and still learn, since they’ve been gracious enough to save the seminars to watch, if you haven’t done so), my head grew 2 sizes larger.

My twitter feed grew due to the amount of new friends made; the beauty about that website is how it can do some actual good–learning new things from other fellow VO artists, getting a completely new perspective, it can be incredible, as opposed to the fountain of dreck that it can be.

Part of the inspiration led me to re-format the website a little, so take a look, give some feedback, let me know if it’s great, if it stinks, or if you really don’t care. I’m open to any criticism. Or praise.

But wow. It was quite the weekend. The conference via the internet was wild, I can only imagine what it’d be like in person!

There will be future changes to the website, trying make the site more pleasing and more “on brand” with who I am. Hopefully, with that, more work!

Midsummer

It’s the end of July, so technically, we’ve passed mid-summer. So, the title is a lie. I apologize.

It’s been an interesting summer, for sure. We’ve all been dealing with whatever COVID related issues have been thrown at us, whether it’s work, school, personal, it’s a hydra that has a limitless amount of heads, at this point. As of this writing, I see the Florida Marlins baseball team has 8 teammates afflicted. Incredible. Not seeing how an NFL season is going to work.

Anyhow, since we’ve turned the corner on the next half of the year, it’s a good time to do a look back at the first half of this year. From all metrics, it’s been pretty successful. Any time you’re able to jump ship from a job you’ve held essentially for 10 years to your dream job is likely to be measured a success. And, judging by the amount of work, it’s a success by that metric as well.

What I’m looking forward to: More VO work; so far, it’s been pretty decent, but looking to get more of it, for sure. Still searching for an agent, but that’s something that’s going to take time, So, by this time next year, I’m hoping I can say that I have plenty to do, an agent that’s helping me get the work, and maybe a little bigger booth.

Ok everyone, stay healthy, and I’ll chat with you next time.
